ADHD & Autism Assessments

Adult Assessments

There is currently no local NHS adult service providing ADHD or Autism assessments.

Adults can access assessments through the NHS Right to Choose pathway. Most providers offer online assessments, and where appropriate, can also support initiating and monitoring medication.

Children’s Assessments

Local CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) continue to provide ADHD and Autism assessments for children.

Please be aware that current waiting times are approximately four years.

In most cases, referrals to CAMHS are made by the child’s school, as they are usually best placed to provide the supporting information required. Families can discuss concerns with the school’s SENCo or pastoral team, who can advise on the referral process.

Children may also be eligible for an NHS‑funded Right to Choose assessment. Providers set their own minimum age criteria, and some require face‑to‑face appointments for younger children, which may involve travelling further.

How to Use Right to Choose for both Adult and Children Assessments

1.            Visit the Right to Choose – ADHD UK website.

2.            Review the list of providers and select one that offers the assessment(s) you require.

3.            Follow the provider’s application process.

4.            If a GP referral is needed:

•              Complete any screening questionnaires requested by the provider.

•              Submit an admin request to the surgery with the completed forms.

•              Our admin team will process the referral. If further information is required, we will contact you.
